Exterior Before & After

The inexpensive way to makeover a house, paint. Instead of buying new garage doors, new exterior doors, and replacing the roof, my dad came to visit and got to work. He and Matt replaced the door handles, light fixtures, weather stripping, and painted the interior and exterior sides of the doors, trim, and garage doors. BEFORE AFTER My mom found a sprig similar to the color of the roof and that is how we matched the paint for the doors. We got paint similar to the color of the cedar siding to paint the garage doors. Mixing in some modern style light fixtures and door handles with the rustic exterior made this tiny house look a little more interesting. I am hoping next year I can work on the landscaping. We (mostly Matt) did a lot of clean up. We moved some rocks but nothing major this year. The interior is coming along. Mixing modern, Asian, and traditional styles with the rustic wood walls and finishes. It’s also officially fall, so I am attempting to …

Half Bathroom Remodel

So I wanted to paint the half bathroom. I finally decided on SW Pale Oak for the walls and BM White Dove for all the trim.   This is how the painting project turned into a total remodel. BEFORE   When I attempted to remove the framed mirror hanging on the wall above the vanity, I quickly realized the layers of paint around the frame had complicated a clean removal. Enlisting the help of my husband, he cut through the paint around the frame. It turned out that the mirror was glued to paper, which was glued to the sheetrock.   Then, we realized that the counter top (which we assume was once a light cream or white) had yellowed. Initially, I thought I could just paint the cabinet and then we could just buy a new countertop. But the cabinet and countertop were not a standard size. This meant we would have to cut the countertop. I did not like the fact that we could ruin the countertop with one wrong move while cutting …

Makeover In Progress: Den

The walls of the house are various shades of cream and tan. I am thankful everything is pretty neutral but in general, everything is much warmer than I would prefer. All the walls, trim, ceilings, and cabinets need painting. But, after painting the laundry room, I remembered, I hate painting. This house, like most in the surrounding area, has an upstairs living area, sometimes referred to as a game room. This is slowly becoming our den (the formal living room, downstairs, is completely empty and will be quite the project). Just like every other room in the home, we are happily using the hand-me-down furniture and decor we have had for years. This room is also housing the rustic, Restoration Hardware inspired, coffee table my husband and brother made. But I worry that this room looks random (Asian, rustic, and traditional mixed together) though I have been pretty deliberate choosing what I put in this room and where I put it.  I am calling this room a colorful and eclectic mix of pieces. I have …
